Meet Tyler Morrison

As a Year Two Apprentice lineman for IMU’s electric department, 21-year-old Tyler Morrison has found his dream career. A lover of the outdoors, his job aligns with his biggest personal priorities.

“I always knew I wanted to work outdoors, and I wanted to be able to help people,” says Tyler. “With this job, I get to spend most of my time outside, and I also get the chance to help people with any problems they may have.”

In his free time, Tyler spends time on the water fishing and boating. In the winter, he likes to snowmobile. At IMU, his outdoor time includes climbing poles and digging holes. Needless to say, he gets plenty of sunshine – and everything else Iowa weather dishes up!

A bright future in electricity

Tyler started with IMU in 2021, at the age of 20. He was hired at entry level – Year One Apprentice – but was able to move up to Year Two ahead of schedule.  “Thanks to other on the job training (OJT) hours from my schooling and a previous summer job,” says Tyler. “I was able to advance.”

His boss, IMU Electrical Superintendent Mike Metcalf, is not surprised by Tyler’s rapid advancement. “Tyler is a quick learner who is dedicated to being a valued member in the electric department,” says Mike, adding that Tyler is personable and gets along well with both co-workers and customers.

Tyler’s current job is to assist in the maintenance of IMU’s electrical system. Once he completes his 4-year apprenticeship and other required certifications, he will be considered a journeyman lineman. It’s a dynamic job in a stable career field, with numerous opportunities for growth.

Apprenticeships lead to great careers

Apprenticeships across the trades are seeing a resurgence in popularity, as younger workers focus more on skills acquisition and hands-on training.
“I believe going through an apprenticeship is a great idea and a good way to start a career,” says Tyler.
His advice to those considering a lineman career? “Try your hardest and work as safe as you can.”
