Get the most from your home WiFi network

Here are some simple ways to get the best WiFi network speed possible within your home.

  • Location, Location, Location: IMU sets up your gateway for maximum signal consistency throughout your home, but over time devices can move or be added. If, for example, your home office is your top signal priority, don’t move it where it will be blocked by floors or thick walls.
  • Boost Your Signal: If you have a large or multi-level home, consider a WiFi mesh extender from IMU to give your signal a boost.
  • Consider Your Equipment: Older or lower-end devices may not have the software required for maximum speeds and throughput. And one older device can slow down your whole network because the network can only work as fast as the slowest device it communicates with. Your newer devices have to “wait in line” for the signal to get to them from the slower one.

KEY TERMS

  • Frequency bands: A range of radio frequencies that various devices, including WiFi routers, can use to transmit signals. WiFi is transmitted on either 2.4GHz (GigaHertz) or 5 GHz.
  • ONT (Optical Network Terminal): An ONT sits at the end of the fiber optic line that comes into your house, and converts the signal for use by your telephone, television, and internet access.
  • WiFi gateway: A WiFi gateway is a piece of hardware that receives digital signals from your internet service provider and translates them into radio (2.4 or 5 GHz) signals that your home devices use. We provide every IMU customer a modern, high quality gateway at install.
  • WiFi mesh extender: A separate device that connects to your router or gateway to bring a stronger WiFi signal to areas of your space that don’t get a strong signal. IMU Fiber will install one for you if it's needed.
