Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) is proud to operate two General Electric turbines capable of producing over 20 megawatts of electricity each. They play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and affordability of our electric service.
IMU Turbines: Ensuring Reliable & Affordable Power
Powering Our Community
First and foremost, these turbines provide IMU with the capacity to power the entire town, even during peak demand periods or in the event of an emergency. This is essential for community safety and well-being, providing power to things like emergency services or water treatment plants to maintain normal operations within our city. This ensures uninterrupted service for our customers, especially during severe weather events.
Financial Benefits for Our Customers
Beyond reliability, IMU also receives substantial financial benefits from owning these turbines. Through capacity payments, we earn nearly $750,000 annually for simply being ready to generate electricity when needed. These funds directly contribute to reducing our customers’ rates, making electricity more affordable for everyone.
Solar Project Update
Join us for a groundbreaking ceremony at the end of September to mark the beginning of this exciting project. Hear from leaders of MEAN, Sandhills, IMU, and the City Council as they discuss the partnership that made this possible and the benefits it will bring to our community.

Continuous Improvement
To maintain the turbines’ reliability and efficiency, IMU conducts regular testing. We recently invested in a new control system to replace the more than 25-year-old computer system that runs the turbines. While this has meant we have ran the turbines more than usual recently, the testing of the new control system is essential for ensuring the long-term performance of the turbines and their ability to respond quickly to changing conditions. IMU appreciates the community’s understanding as we work to provide the best possible service.
